When I first considered using a career counselor I was concerned about spending a lot of time and money and getting nothing but vague generalities and touchy-feely exercises that didn't really help at all. But now I realize I didn't have to worry. Each step of Dr. Litton's approach was directed towards results.
Some career counselors will have you take a bunch of tests on skills, personality, aptitude, and on and on (which of course increases the bill). But Dr. Litton didn't start with selling me tests. First, he learned about my specific situation and listened to my priorities and then he suggested only the one test that was best suited for my situation.
When I went to see Dr. Litton I was experiencing some severe burnout from my previous career. The burnout made it hard for me to think clearly about my choices. And the burnout also made me want to reject any career option that was even slightly connected to my skills and experience because I was afraid that if the new job was too similar then I wouldn't escape from the troubles I was trapped in. Dr. Litton was very good in helping me to be more objective about which career choices were best for me, and that allowed me to make better long term decisions regardless of my intense emotions at the time.
One thing that made me feel comfortable with Dr. Litton was his previous career as a businessman. He seemed to understand lots of my issues just from his own past experience. And he was very practical in his feedback. He was willing to brainstorm openly about my possibilities but in the end he always had tough, practical questions about which options were really the best for me.
Dr. Litton is a very rare counselor because when he has a firm opinion, he will tell you what he thinks. Personally I believe it's a total waste of time to use a counselor who thinks his job is just to encourage you to figure things out for yourself. With Dr. Litton I always felt like we were tackling the problem together. On some things he would follow my lead. But other times, when he felt I was getting off track or being unrealistic, he wasn't shy about saying that. That honesty made Dr. Litton a good sounding board and also made me feel like I was getting results.
If any of my family or friends wanted career counseling services, I would definitely send them to Dr. Litton."
